Why is California the Bluest Red state in the Union?

Why does California constantly vote Republican, but act more like a Democrat state?

For example, California is very socially liberal and is much more sexually liberated than other Red states. It also have a good community college system, and is moving far ahead of most states when it comes to environmental protection and carbon reduction.

With the exception of taxes and gay marriage, voter sponsored initiatives are almost sociality. The keep voting in more and more social spending and state programs.

They’ve even banned more weapons than is usual for a Red state.
